About the record

Some songs stay
because the hurt does.

Work that wears a body down. A home too far away. Someone you would give anything to see again.

Under Covers brings together six old-time songs of hardship, longing, faith, and farewell. Folk songs and spirituals, carried through different lives, find a new telling through Wriddyl.

At the heart of these songs: the weariness in “Hard Times Come Again No More,” the loneliness of “Motherless Child,” the tender goodbye of “The Parting Glass.” Old stories that still feel close.

Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears While we all sup sorrow with the poor There's a song that will linger forever in our ears Oh, hard times come again no more While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay There are frail forms fainting at the door Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say Oh, hard times come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times come again no more There's a pale sorrow maiden who toils her life away With a worn heart whose better days are o'er Though her voice would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day Oh, hard times come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times come again no more 'Tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave 'Tis a wail that is heard upon the shore 'Tis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave Oh, hard times come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times come again no more Oh, hard times come again no more Oh, hard times come again no more Oh, hard times come again no more Oh, hard times come again no more

  2. 02Wayfaring Stranger5:28Lyrics +

I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger Just travelling through this world of woe Yet there's no sickness, toil, or danger In that bright land, to which I go I'm going there, to see my mother I'm going there, no more to roam I'm only going over Jordan I'm only going over home I know dark clouds may gather round me And I know my way is rough and steep Yet golden fields lie just before me Where the redeemed shall ever sleep I'm going there to meet my loved ones To sing with them, forevermore I'm only going over Jordan I'm only going over home

  3. 03I'll Fly Away6:09Lyrics +

Some glad morning when this life is o'er, I'll fly away To a home on God's celestial shore, I'll fly away I'll fly away, O glory, I'll fly away When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away When the shadows of this life have grown, I'll fly away Like a bird from prison bars has flown, I'll fly away I'll fly away, O glory, I'll fly away When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away Oh how glad and happy when we meet, I'll fly away No more cold iron shackles on my feet, I'll fly away I'll fly away, O glory, I'll fly away When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away Just a few more weary days, and then, I'll fly away To a land where joys shall never end, I'll fly away I'll fly away, O glory, I'll fly away When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away

  4. 04In the Pines6:07Lyrics +

My girl, my girl Don't you lie to me Tell me where did you sleep last night In the pines, in the pines Where the sun never shines And you shiver when the cold wind blows My girl, my girl Where will you go While I'm going where the cold wind blows In the pines, in the pines Where the sun never shines And you shiver when the cold wind blows Well the longest train I ever saw Went down that Georgia line The engine passed at six o'clock And the cab passed by at nine In the pines, in the pines Where the sun never shines And you shiver when the cold wind blows Well I asked my captain for the time of day He said he'd throw his watch away A long steel rail and a short cross tie I'm on my way back home In the pines, in the pines Where the sun never shines And you shiver when the cold wind blows My girl, my girl Don't lie to me Tell me where did you sleep last night In the pines, in the pines Where the sun never shines And you shiver when the cold wind blows

  6. 06The Parting Glass5:15Lyrics +

Of all the money that e'er I had I spent it in good company And all the harm that e'er I done Alas, it was to none but me And all I've done for want of wit To memory now I can't recall So fill to me the parting glass Goodnight and joy be with you all Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had They're sorry for my going away And all the sweethearts that e'er I had They’d wish me one more day to stay But since it falls unto my lot That I should rise and you should not I will gently rise and I'll softly call Goodnight and joy be with you all Oh, if I had enough money to spend And leisure time to sit awhile There is a fair maid in this town That sorely has my heart beguiled Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips I own she has my heart in thrall So fill to me the parting glass Goodnight and joy be with you all
